Composition of NFIC

The NFIC is fairly well represented with about 10,748 species of Coleoptera order, followed by Lepidoptera (3770 species), Hymenoptera (1858 species), Hemiptera (1490 species), Isoptera (865 species), Diptera (648 species), Thysanoptera (195 species), Orthoptera (208 species), Odonata (142 species), Neuroptera (48 species), Dermaptera (51 species), and other limited species viz. Collembola, Ephemeroptera, Mecoptera, Thysanura, Psocoptera, etc. NFIC also has unique collection of blown larvae of Lepidoptera. Wet larval collection of order Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Isoptera and other soft body insects is also preserved.

Type Collection

Type specimens are the specimens based on which new speciesare described and named. These specimens are scientifically valuable for natural history and reference. These specimens are definitive standards of reference which provide objectivity to scientific nomenclature. The NFIC has 1884 preserved type specimens of different order.
